SpermFreeze Solution - safe and effective
A study presented at ASRM 20111 compared an egg yolk-free cryopreservation medium from Vitrolife with an egg yolk-containing medium. The focus was to compare the efficacy of the media regarding the following parameters; sperm motility recovery, preservation of sperm-hyaluronic acid binding and preservation of sperm biomarkers that promote paternal contribution of spermatozoa.

The study showed that SpermFreeze Solution and the egg yolk-containing media were equally effective on all tested parameters. SpermFreeze Solution has however the advantage of being egg yolk-free and the risk of transferring diseases from animal derivatives is hence reduced and LOT-to-LOT consistency maintained.

Sperm freezing increases possibility of becoming a parent
In ART, sperm freezing is common among patients with a very low sperm count, those having difficulties producing sperm samples or for those diagnosed with cancer. For these patients, the possibility of becoming a parent depends upon the survival and function of spermatozoa after freezing and thawing procedures.

Developed to maximise sperm survival
SpermFreeze Solution is developed to maximise sperm survival and maintain DNA integrity and function after cryopreservation. SpermFreeze Solution is egg yolk-free and contains only chemically defined components, including glycerol as a cryoprotective agent. The product also contains cholesterol, which has been found to affect the development of acrosomal responsiveness and fertilising ability in vitro2.

Sperm function maintained after cryopreservation
To ensure sperm function after cryopreservation, clinical data was obtained from 48 patients, including ICSI cases and patients receiving conventional IVF treatment3. The study was performed on sibling oocytes and fresh semen was used as a control. The clinical data showed that sperm function was maintained after cryopreservation. There was no statistical difference between the performance of cryopreserved semen compared to fresh semen, see Fig 1.

SpermFreeze Solution™ maintains DNA integrity
Several studies show a negative correlation between defective sperm chromatin structure and fertility, both in vivo4 and in vitro5 . To ascertain that SpermFreeze Solution™ maintains DNA integrity, semen samples from 22 patients were tested in a sperm chromatin structure assay after cryopreservation using SpermFreeze Solution™. The study confirmed that cryopreservation using Vitrolife’s SpermFreeze Solution™ maintained DNA integrity6.
